In choosing to do 100 views of Birmingham, there are certain subjects that you know you will come to. The many different places of worship, the city centre landmarks and of course the canal system are all currently vying for my attention.
In selecting views I will often look at Hiroshige's views of Edo for a connection. Although my style and techniques are significantly different there are strong connections, not least of which is the act of looking and then selecting.
I am lining up this canal view in particular because it reflects the industrial and still 'unpicturesque' nature of much of Birmingham's canals but also because of its strong connection with the Hiroshige print pictured above. I particularly like the dark blue grey that has been used and will look to create inside the tunnel with a similar colour.
